Baldwin Secures Major Order From West Australian Newspapers
10/4/2005
Baldwin has been chosen as the major supplier for the ancillary equipment to be fitted on to the KBA Colora newspaper press line and the semi-commercial Comet press, which have been recently ordered by West Australian Newspapers (WAN). The two press configurations will be installed during the spring and summer of 2006 and will be equipped with Baldwin MAXIMA and WORLD spray dampening systems, Impact Global DUAL head automatic blanket cleaning, ink roller train cleaning and Baldwin Daily Liners and High Liners from its range of cooling and mixing products.
Operations manager Ken Evans was one of the WAN team overseeing the project. “I’ve had experience of the difference that fitting Baldwin technology to a press can make and the results have been stunning,” he says. “I’ve seen wastage significantly reduced, productivity improved and print quality greatly increased following the installation of Baldwin’s spray dampening to an existing Goss press, so was keen to have this equipment fitted to the new KBA presses.
“Baldwin’s Impact automatic blanket cleaning and inking systems are also vital elements in ensuring we achieve the maximum output of top quality work on the new KBA double-width Colora and single-width Comet presses. From my previous experience I know the reliability and effectiveness of Baldwin’s technology and expect the return on investment on the Baldwin equipment to be extremely short,” says Mr Evans.
The new KBA presses offer a combination of cold-set and heat-set printing and will eventually be used to print leading titles such as The West Australian, which has a circulation of 210,000 copies for the weekday editions and 385,000 for the Saturday edition. WAN also publishes 19 regional newspapers and prints publications for a wide range of customers.
Baldwin has won a series of major orders from newspaper groups around the world recently, as companies look at ways of improving efficiency and productivity, while cutting wastage. In an environmentally aware industry, publishers and printers are also increasingly seeking technologies that are kind to the environment and several of Baldwin’s products, such as its Impact blanket cleaning system, lead the way in this area.
